Finally Crystal Pier Reopens After 18 Months – An Icon Returns in Pacific Beach
If you’ve spent any time in Pacific Beach, you know how iconic Crystal Pier is—not just to locals, but to anyone who has ever strolled the boardwalk or watched the sunset from this historic landmark. After nearly 18 months of repair work, the public portion of Crystal Pier is finally set to reopen this Monday, just in time for summer.
Originally opened in 1927 and first known as Pickering’s Pleasure Pier, this beloved Pacific Beach destination is quickly approaching its 100th anniversary. The pier has weathered nearly a century of waves, storms, and change—and now it’s stronger than ever.
A Look Back: Crystal Pier’s Historic Legacy
Crystal Pier was dreamed up by Ernest Pickering, a Los Angeles businessman who envisioned the wharf as a major entertainment hub and marketing tool to sell nearby land. His vision helped shape the identity of Pacific Beach as a fun, family-friendly beachfront community—and his legacy lives on.
In its early years, the pier was a magnet for tourists and locals alike. Over time, it evolved into not only a public fishing and walking pier, but also a charming coastal retreat, with its famous over-the-ocean cottages still available for rent today through the Crystal Pier Hotel.
Why the Repairs Were Needed
In December 2023, a series of intense coastal storms severely damaged the pier, forcing officials to close it to the public. What followed was an extensive series of emergency repairs that began in January 2024, replacing dozens of braces and reinforcing the structure.
Despite completing the initial work by May 2024, continued turbulent conditions necessitated further upgrades, pushing the final phase into early 2025. Altogether, the repairs cost over $2 million, funded in part by the city and supported by Bill and Claudia Allen of the Crystal Pier Hotel.
Today, thanks to collaborative efforts by city staff and local stakeholders, Crystal Pier is once again safe and open for public use—though city officials note that strengthening work will continue to ensure the pier’s long-term resilience.
