17 Things To Know When Living In San Diego

May 25, 2020 by Wesley Guest

17 Things To Know When Living In San Diego

This list is useful for anyone currently living in San Diego or anyone thinking about moving to San Diego. Some of the topics on the list of cost of living, the surf scene, Mexican food, plus everything else you should know.

These 17 “things” are 100% my opinion and represent my personal San Diego experience. If you agree, disagree or would like to add more details, by all means please do so in the comments.

  • San Diego is not all beaches – In addition to many beautiful beaches, we have many diverse types of neighborhoods and locales.
  • Most of the time the weather is relatively picture perfect but it does rain every now and then. There are pros and cons to a rainy winter and spring here.
  • Seasons don’t seem to exist if you are from just about everywhere else. It gets cold but nothing like most of the other parts of the country.

  • Nature is spectacular here – There are many of parks, beaches, and mountains to explore.
  • Mexican food truly lives up to it’s reputation. You can thank our location. Politics aside, our southern border definitely brings in the best Mexican food in the country.
  • There is always something to do for everyone – festivals, tons of farmers markets, shows, nightlife, marathons, hiking, boating, we have it all.
  • Craft beer scene is stellar. Actually it’s better. The craft beer capital of the world.
  • We have Comic-Con. If you somehow are not familiar, google it and click on the images. It’s true, it literally takes over the city every year and its awesome.
  • There are lots of transplants. You will be surprised in conversation when someone says they are from San Diego. It is not that common.
  • San Diego is an extremely dog friendly. I mean extreme. Like you will sEe dogs everywhere. Yes everywhere their humans go. Nothing surprises me anymore.

  • In a normal environment under normal circumstances, you can easily visit Mexico for the day. Walk in, hangout and walk right back out.
  • The surf scene in San Diego is real. The beaches and choices for surf spots are plentiful. Its an awesome lifestyle and experience to be a part of.
  • A car (or vehicle) is pretty necessary. San Diego does not have the best public transportation. Ride share is plentiful and electric scooters have taken over the city but for the most part… You need whip.
  • Living in San Diego does not come cheap. The cost of living in San Diego ranks number 12 in the united states (Ouch) as far as most expensive cities to live. But is also ranks number 6 for quality of life. We pay the price but we are happy.
  • We have droughts. San Diego is coastal but for the most part, San Diego is much more arid and winters are still dry compared with most other zones with this type of climate. The good news is it doesn’t rain that much. The result can be a drought but usually a very slow fire season. The bad news is some winters are pretty rainy. The good news is no drought but it can lead to a buys fire season.
  • Earthquakes. Yes, we have earthquakes. News flash, anyone can have an earthquake. Also, San Diego is built for earthquakes and I can assure you, once you’ve been through a couple earth quakes, you don’t worry about them all that much.
  • San Diego is one of the best foodie cities in America. We have it all.
