What Should I Do Today That’s Fun In San Diego

What Should I Do Today That’s Fun In San Diego

Are you are looking for the a list of the absolute best things to do in San Diego? Maybe from someone a local, someone who has lived here for over a quarter of a century and knows their way around like the back of their hand?

Well look no further! I am going to give you my personal list of the 7 most fun things to do in San Diego. There are so many things to do, it can actually get very confusing! In addition to giving you some great suggestions, many of these activities do not require a whole lot of money. In fact, many things to do on my list below and see are absolutely free. From beautiful beaches to a variety of fabulous locations, San Diego has a lot of fun things to offer to both adults and kids alike and at any time of the year.

As the legendary pet detective Ace Ventura always says, “Alrighty then, lets hop right in!”

#1. Balboa Park

Balboa Park is an amazing place to spend an afternoon or your weekend or even your day off playing hooky from work. It is located super close to downtown San Diego and you will have a lot of things to do within the Park. Balboa Park has perimeter hiking or running trails alongside the world-famous Prado.

The architecture is also amazing and I highly recommend you check out the botanical gardens full of plants and flowers. It also has a huge pond with koi fish and swimming turtles in it as well as other kinds of cool living animals in the pond. You will also find many museums for both children and adults in this area.

This Park also features an incredible theatre and there’s also a world-famous auditorium with an outdoor organ. There is also a Japanese-Friendship Garden which is recommended and worth checking out. There is also a huge dog park which is very popular with residents and visitors. It is a great place to spend the day in San Diego.

#2. San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo is located right inside Balboa Park. It is not only a great experience to visit, they are doing great things for different animals in terms of protecting the endangered species. You and your kids will get to see live animals such as hippos, polar bears, elephants, giraffe, lions and so much more. The koalas and orangutans are very popular. Personally my favorite animals tend to have claws and massive teeth so I find myself checking out the grizzly bears and big cats the most.

This is how I recommend you do it: When you get there, b line it and head straight to the double-decker buses and sit on the second level (unless its 90 degrees and sunny out). Here you will have the best view of almost ll the animals in about 95% of the zoo. Keep in mind that San Diego Zoo is built on a very steep hill, so you will be walking downhill to see some animals and uphill to see other animals. If you see everything from the bus to start, you can figure out what you want to see the second time and try to avoid any unnecessary hill climbing.

You can also get alcoholic beverages in the zoo. I recommend the frozen margaritas!

#3. Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey Pines State Reserve is picturesque and one of the best parts of La Jolla. Home to some of the best surfing in the state, there are also lots of hiking trails here to explore, and an actual hang gliding port for the most daring thrill seekers. Me? Not so much.

There is a world famous and ocean front gold course at Torrey Pines. There are a several major PGA golf tournaments played in Torrey Pines. Some of the most famous golf battles between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson went down right here.

#4. Coronado Island & Coronado Beach

You have a few ways of getting to Coronado Island. You can come up from the south through Imperial Beach or make your way by car across the world-famous Coronado Bridge (probably the most popular way). If you are departing for Coronado from Downtown San Diego, you can use Coronado ferry and get there in a couple of minutes. Super convenient.

Coronado is pretty small, so you can easily get from one side to the other. You can use a bike, electric scooters, or hop in an Uber. If you opt for the ferry option, you will see some restaurants and but will still have a ways to go to get to the Hotel del Coronado. If you make your way to the hotel Del (keep an eye out for apparitions… spooky), you can enjoy a glasses of wine or brewski as you are enjoy the beach views.

#5. USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway Museum is located in San Diego Bay right next to Seaport Village. It’s a museum now so it’s a great experience go up and see all the different aspects of the carrier. On the tarmac, you get to see a lot of aircraft such as retired fighter jets and several helicopters too. You can explore the different areas of the ship such as the mess hall, sleeping quarters, and the bridge were I assume the captain and the officers command from.

#6. Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter is extremely popular in Downtown San Diego, but what most people don’t realize is its actually not a very big area. You can visit shops, restaurants, bars, pubs, cafes, theaters, music venues, and many other unique places and things to do. You can get some lunch with your family here and have fun. It’s a great experience and more importantly a safe experience for all.

#7. Maritime Museum Of San Diego

Maritime Museum located near seaport village and the USS Midway Museum is also lot of fun, especially if you have kids. You can tour several old military  submarines, and / or take a look at a Star of India, which is a famous old-time merchant ship. There are also a couple of other wooden sail ships there too.

Those are seven things of the absolute best things you can do in San Diego. For details or if you want any more recommendations on San Diego, please reach out.
