Living In San Diego Pros And Cons

May 11, 2020 by Wesley Guest

Living In San Diego Pros And Cons

San Diego is a beautiful place, which sits along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Southern California. About 1.5 million people live here, making it the eighth largest city in the U.S. So let’s hop right in and look at all the living in San Diego pros and cons.

Search for San Diego homes, condos, and town homes for sales…

Living In San Diego Pros

#1. Weather

Tourism is one of the biggest industries in San Diego and we can thank the weather. Versus the rest of the country, the combination of climate and weather make San Diego very desirable. A typical day is usually sunny and comfortable. Any day is a potential beach day as San Diego gets very little rain and virtually no snow.

With the weather and climate, San Diego is an incredibly easy place to live.

#2. The Beaches

San Diego has over 70 miles of coastline. There are actually very few locations in the entire San Diego that are far from the surf and the sand. My favorite beaches Mission Beach, Coronado Beach, Del Mar, Ocean Beach, Solana Beach, and parts of La Jolla. San Diego beaches are great for surfing, body boarding (spongers), windsurfing, kayaking paddle boarding, playing in the sand, and so much more.

#3. Dinning $ Craft Beer Scene

For dining out, we have some great and very diverse options. Fresh sushi, Italian classics, world-class steak houses, many Mexican food options, and countless other selections to choose from. Whether it be a restaurant, a taco stand, or something else, there are amazing options all over San Diego.

Also, there are over one hundred and fifty local breweries in San Diego and that is not even including tasting rooms and local pubs. The craft beer scene here is credited as being the craft beer capital of the world. It is an incredible scene, which you should check out.

#4. Culture

Most people don’t know that San Diego is home to the United States largest cultural urban park, which is Balboa Park. It is very closely located to downtown San Diego. It has art galleries, museums, beautiful architecture botanical gardens, and a world famous organ auditorium. It also has gardens and of course, the world-famous San Diego Zoo. It is a fantastic experience and a place you must do if in San Diego.

#5. Location & Experiences

When you live here, it feels like something is happening almost every single weekend. There are major sporting events, concerts, beer gardens, golf tournaments, horse races and all kinds of things to do on the weekends.

Also, San Diego is ideally located for short day trips or weekend trips. It is about an hour and a half away from Disneyland, less than three hours away from snow and snowboarding in Big Bear, five hours outside of Las Vegas by car,  a two-hour flight away for Park City Utah for snowboarding and skiing. The local mountains and desert areas are just about an hour and a half drive away.

Living In San Diego Cons

#1. Cost Of Living

San Diego is ranked number 12 on the list of most expensive cities to live in the United States on most major rankings, but it’s also important to note that San Diego is ranked number 5 as far as the quality of life is concerned by those same rankings!

#2. Traffic

Traffic jams in San Diego can be considerable, especially during rush hour or certain times a day. I get around the traffic by trying to find alternative routes when possible. There’s usually a faster route if you can find it, no matter what’s happening on the roads or freeways.

Check out San Diego’s most desirable communities to live and visit here…

Also, if you are comparing traffic, San Diego does have traffic, but it’s a lot less congested and nowhere near what you face if you live in other popular Southern California cities such as Los Angeles or Orange County.

#3. Public Transportation

The public transportation in San Diego is really not that good. The only time that it’s feasible to use is if you work and live in the Downtown San Diego. You can use the trolleys, bus or the coaster to come from North County, but for most of the residents of San Diego, one vehicle per household is probably going to be necessary.

#4. Lack of Professional Sport Teams

It’s no secret the San Diego Charger left San Diego a few years ago to try their luck up in LA, but the good news is we still have the San Diego Padres. Even though they may not be a perennial contender, they play in Major League Baseball’s best ballpark Petco Park. In addition to the San Diego Padres, we have the San Diego Gulls.

We also have a major golf tournaments and a surging San Diego State football team with a brand new stadium that is scheduled to begin construction very soon – it is going to be a world-class collegiate facility. San Diego State’s men basketball team is ranked in the top five in the nation. If Covid-19 didn’t happen, the 2020 squad was a favorite to win the national championship.

Those are my pros and cons of living in San Diego.

Also, if you also need any help navigating San Diego as far as living, eating, sleeping, working, or playing, I will be happy to help. Don’t be shy about reaching out to me. Call, text, or email me anytime!
